How to Stay Connected to a Loved One with Dementia

Dementia is a condition that can make us worried about maintaining a bond with an affected loved one. Your connection may change and evolve, but there are plenty of ways to keep it alive and create happy moments with a person living with Dementia.

1. Make it personal

Adjust how you interact with your loved one based on their interests, things they like, their past experiences, and what they can do now. Your unique understanding of their background can help you connect with them better.

2. Create a Routine

Establishing a consistent visiting schedule can provide comfort and predictability, helping your loved one feel secure.

3. Use Visual Aids

Photos, memory books, and familiar objects can evoke memories and serve as conversation starters, making visits more meaningful.

4. Engage in Familiar Activities

Involve your loved one in activities they used to enjoy, such as gardening, cooking, or listening to music. This can create a sense of normality and joy.

5. Be Present

Sometimes, just being there is enough. Physical presence, even in comfortable silence, can offer companionship and immense comfort to your loved one.

6. Adapt to their Communication Style

Pay attention to non-verbal cues and adapt your communication style to theirs. Use touch, eye contact, and a calm tone.

7. Stay Positive
