At Alderbrook, we have a dedicated Activities coordinator to ensure there are always varied and engaging activities for our residents to get involved with.
From arts and crafts sessions to coffee mornings, fitness classes, bingo, knitting, quizzes, baking, afternoon tea, pizza making, dancing, singing, parties or yoga, meaningful activities add value and quality to a someone’s life.
Offering a wide range of activities is essential for social interaction and cognitive stimulation for our residents. We offer activities to suit a range of interests which can be tailored for varying abilities and the level of support needed for someone to enjoy themselves.
Conditions such as dementia can cause people to become withdrawn from activities and interaction with people therefore it’s really important to try and maintain their interests and relationships to support people to lead a better and more enjoyable quality of life.
Meaningful activities should be linked to hobbies or interests the person enjoyed before their diagnosis. As choice and independence are a core value underpinning our care here at Alderbrook, our residents are encouraged to take an active role in choosing and defining activities that are meaningful to them.
The strength and abilities of each of our residents will vary a great deal therefore as part of someone’s person-centred care plan we can understand what they can and would like to do and the level of support they require to be safe whilst retaining as much independence as possible and being involved in activities that are meaningful to them.
Getting outside and enjoying some fresh air is also vital for wellbeing. At Alderbrook Silver Lodge we have created a beautiful, landscaped garden surrounded by lush, tall trees offering the perfect environment for going outside. Our setting means we are blessed with the joys of nature and animals can often be spotted within the grounds. The impact of the natural world can be profound and bring calm, comfort and a feeling of relaxation and happiness.
We also ensure plenty of one-to-one time for puzzles or a good old natter. We take the time to get to know everyone who lives here, to understand their story, their history, their lives and loves, as well as any triggers for certain symptoms to ensure we can alleviate these.
Clare, Home Manager says, “meaningful activities are a big focus for us at Alderbrook ensuring choice and variety to stimulate the body and mind. As part of our holistic approach to care combining activities with essential care such as medication, cleanliness and good nutrition ensures positive outcomes for someone’s overall wellbeing and happiness”.
