The Power of Community

A cheerful group activity at Alderbrook Care Home in Leeds: two young girls wearing festive headbands, a smiling caregiver, and an elderly resident in a wheelchair are gathered around a table, creating crafts together with markers and decorations. The scene is bright and warm, with a window view in the background.

At Alderbrook Care Home, we value our connections with the wider community. They play an important role in supporting residents’ mental, emotional, and social health – particularly for those living with complex mental and physical health conditions like dementia.

Our recent activities have shown how powerful these community links can be in creating a sense of belonging. They’re also a wonderful opportunity for intergenerational bonding, bringing together different generations to share meaningful moments and mutual understanding.

When our local primary school visited us at Christmas to take part in craft activities with residents, it wasn’t just a joyful afternoon of creativity. It was a chance for our residents to share their stories, wisdom, and experiences with the children, creating connections that went far beyond the crafts themselves.

Our residents also enjoyed a variety show put on by local school pupils. Everyone was delighted to sing along and dance together, with residents reminiscing about favourite songs from their younger days and pupils learning about the music of the past. These shared experiences highlighted how much we can learn from one another, no matter our age.

Four images from a festive activity at Alderbrook Care Home in Leeds. The first image shows a group of children wearing reindeer antlers and festive outfits, performing for residents seated in a lounge. The second image features residents and staff clapping and enjoying the performance. The third image captures two children with festive headwear seated at a table with a resident, crafting decorations. The fourth image shows children and a care worker smiling alongside a resident at another table, working together on crafts.

There are many benefits of intergenerational activities for our residents:

  • Mutual understanding: Connecting across generations fosters empathy, understanding, and creates shared experiences that are good for everyone.
  • Emotional uplift: Laughter, conversation and shared memories can inspire joy and a renewed sense of purpose.
  • Cognitive stimulation: Activities like crafts and performances engage the mind, while meaningful interactions with new people keep residents feeling connected.

A sense of belonging: Spending time with younger generations strengthens our bonds within our community and reduces isolation.

At Alderbrook, we truly value these opportunities to connect with visitors of all ages, especially younger members of our community. These moments remind us of the power of shared experiences and the fact that we often have more in common than we realise.
